OUR WORK

How we are delivering the 7 acts

  • The vast bulk of known fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground if we are to get even close to the Paris 1.5℃ target. Infrastructure is already in place to burn 3x this amount - with the fossil fuel companies continuing to invest in funding and extracting even more. Your bank and investments are likely to be funding this.

We are working across the whole healthcare ecosystem to encourage and facilitate the move of money away from banks and investments that support fossil fuel extraction, thereby addressing a key element of organisations’ Scope 3 emissions.

The Intensive Care Society has committed to both, and many others have already divested (e.g. the Royal College of Physicians)[i] So, too, have many beyond healthcare - Universities (Glasgow, the Russell Group (including Oxford & Cambridge, University College London)[ii] - and many, many others.

We don’t offer financial advice, but work with partner organisations like Mother Tree who do. In this way, we’ve been able to offer energy and money-saving opportunities to organisations, their members and their employees, to make ethical switches.

  • Power stations are responsible for 16% of UK Greenhouse Gas emissions - emitting nearly 67 million tonnes CO₂/year.

We are working with healthcare organisations (including the NHS and independent healthcare providers) to facilitate their move (and that of their staff and members) to 100% renewable power supplies. This can be delivered by a move to a 100% renewable supplier such as Octopus Energy or Good Energy, by installing onsite generation (wind turbines or solar panels); or by financing and owning a new renewables development (through ‘Power Purchase Agreements' (PPAs). PPAs are commonplace in private industry, who use renewable energy solutions to both reduce their carbon emissions and to obtain lower costs and future price certainty.

We are working to overcome hurdles to the use of PPAs by the NHS, such as the interpretation of the accounting treatment for such arrangements under IFRS16 - Leases, as capital rather than revenue expenditure.  Meanwhile, we are partnering with a number of NHS organisations and experts in global renewable energy investment, to rapidly create and deploy solutions.

  • Overall, food production accounts for 34% of greenhouse gas emissions. Cattle belching methane contribute a lot - 60kg CO₂e per kg of beef produced. A move to a plant-based diet (ideally, local and seasonal) can make a big difference - and is a lot healthier, too.

We are working with healthcare providers to make nutritious, delicious, affordable plant-based meals the default option, without restricting choice - lowering emissions, saving money, supporting UK agriculture, and improving health. If New York can manage it, why can’t we?

We are creating a recipe for action to help organisations change with ease, working from procurement and contracting, to catering and consumption.
